The Texas Veterans Legal Assistance Project (VLAP) is a statewide Texas Legal Services Center project to expand the availability of legal assistance to low-income Texas veterans and their families, with a focus on outreach to the disabled veterans who live in rural areas of the state. There is no charge for its services, which are provided by telephone to eligible veterans, at 800-622-2520, Option 2.
Eligibility Guidelines:
To receive services, you must be a Texas resident, a veteran (or the spouse, dependent, or surviving spouse of a Texas veteran), and have a household income at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines.
Services Provided
VLAP welcomes most civil legal questions, including those that relate to military benefits, federal and state public benefits and disability benefits. Common legal issues we address:
- Family law
- Employment
- Housing
- Consumer protection
- Bankruptcy
- Probate
- Department of Veterans Affairs benefits
- Expunction
- Military discharge upgrades
Additional Services
- VLAP offers referrals to private attorneys and community services where appropriate.
- VLAP supports representatives of the Texas Veterans Commission, Veterans County Service Officers, and Department of Veterans Affairs counselors.
