Who We Are

For more than 20 years, Philadelphia Legal Assistance (PLA) has provided free civil legal assistance to low-income individuals and families in Philadelphia.

About 30% of the people in Philadelphia live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level.  For those who are low-income, elderly, or disabled, our legal assistance is often crucial for them to protect their homes, their children, their safety, and their livelihood.  PLA is dedicated to helping those who cannot afford legal counsel navigate the legal system and understand and safeguard their rights.

Income Guidelines
Asset determination is made according to PLA’s asset ceiling policy.

Applicants for service with income levels between 125%-187.5% of the poverty level may be eligible if special circumstances exist including but not limited to fixed debt obligations, certain family or medical expenses, seasonal employment or they are seeking a government benefit.

Information

For custody or protection from abuse, call the Family Law Intake Line at 215-981-3838.

If your legal problem is SSI, you need to apply to Community Legal Services (CLS) for assistance. Your case may be referred from CLS to PLA. For the intake hours at CLS, see the SSI page of CLS’s web site.

For all other issues, call 215-981-3800 Monday-Thursday, between 9:30 AM-12:00 PM.
