Who We Are
North Carolina Prisoner Legal Services (NCPLS) provides legal assistance to inmates in the North Carolina Department of Correction (DOC) ranging from advice about prisoner’s legal rights to representation in litigation in state and federal court. We accept cases based on referrals from attorneys as well as direct requests from inmates or individuals acting on behalf of inmates incapable of requesting legal assistance. The organization is divided into three “teams” of attorneys and paralegals: Post-Conviction, Civil, and Support Services.

- NCPLS represents inmates in the North Carolina Department of Correction and in North Carolina county jails who believe they have been wrongfully convicted, received a legally erroneous sentence, or face immigration consequences as a result of their convictions. The office also represents inmate who believe the conditions of their confinement are inhumane — this includes cases where inmates have been abused by guards; assaulted by other inmates due to negligence by prison personnel; injured while doing a prison job; or who are receiving improper medical treatment. Inmates seeking legal assistance in any matter should always feel free to contact the office.

- Unless there is some significant reason why an incarcerated person cannot write to requst assistance (e.g., emergency, disability, etc.), we prefer to receive a written request from our client with an explanation of the legal problem together with supporting documentation and a description of the desired outcome.
