Who We Are
The Legal Aid Society of Rockland’s Civil Division provides legal representation to clients whose income is within 200% of the poverty level in: evictions, foreclosures, cases involving clients’ right to receive public assistance benefits, immigration matters, bankruptcies, and divorces. In addition, lawyers in Children’s Rights Division (CRD) represent children in family court proceedings involving, abuse and neglect, juvenile delinquency, PINS, custody and visitation, family offenses, termination of parental rights, and foster care placements. All the cases for that division are assigned by the Rockland County Family Court and there are no eligibility criteria for those cases. The program information below pertains only to the Civil Division.

- Income Guidelines
- In mortgage foreclosure matters, individual representation is limited to families and individuals within 300%of the poverty level.
There are no income guidelines for foreclosure clinics held once a week (currently on Tuesday evenings).
No specific income guidelines apply to persons living with HIV/AIDS.
Under extraordinary circumstances, exceptions to the income guidelines are made at the discretion of program staff.

Clients over 60 are referred to the Office for the Aging (845-364-2110) except in evictions and foreclosures.

- Full Legal Representation
- Description of Services
- Level of representation is determined on a case by case basis based clients’ individual circumstances and needs. There is no area of law in which our services are limited to providing advice or brief service.
- Emergency Instructions
- What is an Emergency? No shelter or food, lockout, 72-hour notice of eviction from Rockland County Sheriff, notice to appear in court within the next 10 days, discontinuance or reduction of public assistance benefits within 10 days.
Same as in all other cases, except that on weekdays, emergency calls are accepted 9am to 5pm.

- Every effort is made to see walk-in clients. Walk-in clients who have emergency problems are seen immediately. No walk-in clients will be accepted on Wednesday evenings.
