Who We Are

The Canton office of the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York provides civil legal services to low income residents of St. Lawrence County and the portion of St. Regis Indian Reservation within Franklin County.

We provide free advice, brief service, referrals, community legal education, and full representation in a variety of legal matters.

We also provide services through our many special projects including the

  • Disability Advocacy Project
  • Homelessness Prevention Projects,
  • Domestic Violence Legal Assistance Project
  • Crime Victims Attorney Project
  • Senior Legal Services Program
  • Foreclosure Prevention Project
  • Low Income Taxpayer Clinic
  • Upstate New York Immigration Law Project.

Additionally, our Private Attorney Involvement program works with local private lawyers who volunteer to represent our clients without charge on cases such as name change, divorce, bankruptcy, wills and advance directives, evictions or consumer defense.

Legal Aid of Northeastern New York has offices in Albany, Amsterdam, Canton, Plattsburgh, and Saratoga Springs and serves 16 counties. Special projects vary by office and county.

We have access to interpreter services for all languages.
Income Guidelines
Some special projects have income caps at 150% or 200% of the federal poverty guidelines or no income caps at all. Additionally, households with incomes up to 200% of poverty may be eligible for services depending upon their fixed debts and obligations, employment-related or medical expenses, and other factors.
Your family’s income should be at or below the following percentage of the federal poverty level

Must reside in St. Lawrence County or in the portion of the St. Regis Indian Reservation within Franklin County.

Description of Services
Full representation will be provided according to program resources, availability of staff or special grant guidelines.

In most instances, advice or brief service; if a case falls within one of our special projects, full representation is possible. Regrettably, due to limited resources, LASNNY cannot provide representation to everyone who calls.

Emergency Instructions
What is an Emergency? Immediate lack of food, shelter or clothing; a court or other legal deadline within one week; taking of child by unauthorized person, including CPS, or domestic violence victim with safety issue.
