Indiana Legal Services – Low Income Taxpayer Clinic

Our Tax Clinic serves the community by providing FREE legal assistance to Indiana taxpayers involved in disputes with IRS, including:

• Audits/ Exams
• Appeals
• Collection issues
• Innocent spouse relief
• Tax-related identity theft
• Worker misclassification
• Earned Income Tax Credit
• Filing status disputes, and more.

This includes representation before U.S. Tax Court, if necessary. Our Tax Clinic may also represent clients in state tax controversies if they are directly related to federal tax controversies.

We also conduct regular outreach throughout the state in an effort to educate taxpayers regarding their rights and responsibilities as taxpayers. This includes outreach to taxpayers who speak English as a second language, as well as outreach to survivors of abuse. Our Tax Clinic is located in Bloomington and serves clients throughout the entire state of Indiana. Although all of the Tax Clinic’s services are provided free of charge, we are generally limited to representing clients whose income does not exceed 250 percent of the annual Federal Poverty Guidelines. Click here to learn more about these guidelines. However, we may be able to accept clients outside these limits in certain circumstances. Contact us to determine whether you are eligible.

You may apply by phone during regular office hours of the ILS Bloomington location. You should have any IRS notices and tax documents that were sent to you and any paperwork you filed with the IRS.

If you are not already a client,  Indiana legal Services (ILS) will have to conduct an intake interview over the phone (or you can apply online).
