Who We Are

Human Rights First is a non-governmental human rights organization that seeks to promote respect for and observance of international human rights and refugee law. In the Asylum Legal Representation Program at Human Rights First, volunteer lawyers assist indigent asylum seekers with pro bono representation.

How to Get Help

We are offering remote services at this time. Call our asylum screening line at (917) 320-9601.

If detained at the Delany Hall Detention Center call Human Rights First toll-free at, #5052, (212) 629-6170 or (212) 845-5222 between the hours of 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Human Rights First only provides legal assistance in asylum cases. Please note, there is a waiting list form for indigent asylum seekers.

We will serve anyone who can travel to Manhattan on a regular basis to meet with our staff members and pro bono attorneys. Most of our clients live in the five boroughs and northern New Jersey, with a smaller group coming from Long Island, Westchester County, and farther afield.

Full Legal Representation-For Asylum cases
Emergency Instructions
What is an Emergency? A one-year from arrival filing deadline for applying for asylum that is approaching or past. Or have a 30-day appeal filing deadline for cases that have been denied at the immigration court level.

Asylum seekers must mark their date of arrival, whether they have applied for asylum, or whether they have any court dates on the wait list form. If Human Rights First is able to schedule appointments, they will be prioritized.
