Who We Are
The Gender Equality Law Center is a nonprofit legal services and advocacy center. Our mission is to advance laws and policies that will promote gender equality in all spheres of public and private life.
We fight to break down barriers caused by explicit bias and implicit stereotyping that have historically limited rights and opportunities for individuals because of their gender, gender identity, gender expression and/or sexual orientation.
We also work to identify and challenge other biases, including race, age and religion that impact society’s views of women and gender non-conforming individuals.

GELC provides pro bono legal services to New Yorkers who have experienced discrimination on the basis of gender, gender identity or expression, and/or sexual orientation. Our work primarily is focused on discrimination or harassment that occurs within the employment or education sector. The issues in which GELC focuses include, but are not limited to, sexual harassment and assault, pregnancy discrimination and accommodation, unequal pay, paid family leave, LGBTQ discrimination, discrimination on the basis of one’s status as a victim of intimate partner violence or stalking, gender discrimination and caregiver discrimination.
In selecting the clients that GELC represents, we look for cases that will advance new laws and expand existing legal protections for both individuals and groups, using a variety of advocacy efforts to promote and influence change within workplaces and public accommodations, such as educational institutions.
GELC also co-counsels with or provides referrals to a large network of private or government attorneys. We advise lawyers both in the private and public sector on litigation strategy and the substantive law on cases that have a significant legal issue impacting gender equality. GELC also works to advance and support legislation that will enhance the rights and opportunities of individuals who have historically experienced gender-based discrimination.
