Provides free civil (non-criminal) legal advice and representation to low-income people in the areas of bankruptcy, civil rights, consumer, debtor rights, disability, domestic violence, elder law, employment, family, garnishment, health, housing, public benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and unemployment compensation.

Households with income up to 187.5% of poverty may be accepted in certain situations. Households also must have low resources. The elderly (60 or older) may receive legal advice without regard to finances. Applicants also must meet citizenship requirements.

- Provides free civil (non-criminal) legal advice and representation to low-income people in the areas of bankruptcy, civil rights, consumer, debtor rights, disability, domestic violence, elder law, employment, family, garnishment, health, housing, public benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and unemployment compensation.
Central Virginia Legal Aid Society (CVLAS) does not handle every request for assistance, but never charges a fee for its services. CVLAS does not handle criminal, traffic, personal injury, malpractice, property damage, or cases that may generate attorney’s fees where a lawyer could obtain a fee from the other side or from recovery.
- Emergency Instructions
- What is an Emergency? Walk-in intake is done for emergencies. An emergency is: recent papers from a court, government agency or subsidized landlord that require a response within four (4) business days; a court or administrative hearing within four (4) business days; a legal deadline within four (4) business days; a lockout, utility shutoff, or self-help eviction; an impending non-judicial foreclosure within ten (10) calendar days; or a recent incident of serious domestic violence.
