Who We Are
Start Small Think Big (“Start Small”) is a nonprofit organization that focuses on pairing entrepreneurs positioned to grow their businesses with top pro bono attorneys and financial and marketing experts. Our thoughtful and highly curated blend of one-on-one legal, financial management, and marketing services equips businesses with a solid foundation on which to create jobs and build wealth through entrepreneurship.

- Eligibility Restrictions
- All clients must meet Start Small’s eligibility criteria. They must own a for-profit business; they must already be selling goods or services, or have a legal need that keeps them from operating; they must be below certain limits for household income and assets; and they must live in or operate a business in either New York City or the Bay Area (either San Francisco or Alameda county).

- Provide Legal Assistance Start Small provides clients access to small business legal assistance, primarily by referring our clients to firms for pro bono counsel. This assistance ensures that our clients develop a sound legal infrastructure for their businesses, helping them to manage the risks associated with starting a small business and providing them with a stable foundation upon which to grow. Our volunteer attorneys address various legal issues including: (i) choosing and forming an appropriate legal structure for the business or restructuring it to permit additional equity participation; (ii) corporate governance/corporate housekeeping; (iii) contract review and drafting; (iv) commercial lease review and negotiation; (v) employment advice; (vi) tax, including sales tax; (vii) intellectual property; (viii) legal aspects of doing business online; and (ix) some regulatory, licensing, and permitting needs.
