Who We Are
Legal Assistance of Western New York, Inc. (LawNY®) is a non-profit law firm that provides free, civil legal aid to low income residents of 14 counties in Western New York. LawNY offices may be able to assist with problems relating to housing/homelessness, public benefits, barriers to employment, SSD/SSI, veterans, health insurance, and sexual assault or domestic violence.

- LawNY will ensure that low-income residents of our communities are not denied access to legal services because they have limited English proficiency (LEP). The same degree of professionalism, respect, and courtesy that is afforded to non-LEP clients will be received by LEP clients regardless of race or citizenship status.
LawNY will provide language services through bilingual staff members, by contracting with outside interpreter services or voluntary community interpreters, or by use of telephone language services.

- Calls are taken during office hours only.
If your landlord has locked you out, shut off your heat or water, taken the doors off your apartment, or moved your belongings out without a court order and the presence of a sheriff or marshal, these actions are illegal and you may call the police. If the police say they can’t do anything, take down the name and badge number of the person you speak to and let LawNY know.
If you believe you have an emergency situation which is occurring during non-business hours, additional assistance may be received by dialing “211”

You will need to have proof of alien status for eligibility if you are not a U.S. citizen.
- Information
- For clients with consumer issues: LawNY provides assistance with frozen bank accounts. LawNY also provides bankruptcy assistance in select cases where a person owns his/her house and is threatened with foreclosure and other consumer issues.
For clients seeking divorce: LawNY provides assistance with uncontested divorces where the husband and wife have been living apart for more than 1 year. There must be a child support order and custody order already in place.
We also provide assistance with utility shutoffs, Landlord/Tenant issues and evictions, public benefits terminations, unemployment insurance compensation denials, and SSI denials with medical support.
